Apple iPhone 6 Short Review
The newest flagship of Apple was one of the most discussed and rumored flagships in the tech arena. The gossips and speculations about the model were related about everything you can think of – design, size, name, hardware, extra features, like NFC (for Apple Pay), camera etc. Weeks before the official debut of Apple iPhone 6 there were rumors that the company might release a second flagship with phablet size. iOS users seem to be the last to receive a large-sized smartphone after the launching of phablets running on the other two most popular platforms – Android and Windows Phone in the last years.
The debut of iPhone 6 and its big sibling Apple iPhone 6 Plus proved that waiting was worth it. iPhone 6 is the largest smartphone of the series released until today. It is powerful, capable modern device that heats up the competition on the arena of high-end smartphones launched by manufacturers in 2014.
Built and Design
Apple iPhone 6 is a proud member of the iPhone series and comes with similar design to its predecessors. If you like iPhone, you will love the iPhone 6. It comes in perfect size to satisfy the fans of larger devices but at the same time, it is small enough to be comfortable for holding and working with it all day long. The exact dimensions of the flagship are 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm and it weighs 129 grams (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 in / 4.55 oz).
The panel of iPhone 6 is made from glass and anodized aluminum with soft curves around the edges, different from the edgy chassis of iPhone 5S. The thin bezels and the slim panel of the new flagship give it more appealing and elegant look. Apple has changes the arrangement of some of the buttons of the phone, like the power button which is located on the right side of the panel above the slot for nano-SIM. Overall the iPhone 6 stands out with a stylish and ergonomic design that assured the perfect comfort for users for everyday use.
One of the disadvantages of the flagship compared to its main rivals like Sony Xperia Z3 and Samsung Galaxy S5 is that it is not water- and dust-resistant.
Apple iPhone 6 comes with Retina display, with 4.7-inch diagonal LCD screen with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels and pixel density of 326ppi. Before you think that this resolution is rather low compared to the QHD screens of the flagships of competitors, let us remind you that the numbers of resolution are not the only factor for the quality of the display, similar to the sensor’s megapixel count of camera that is not the only thing that determines the performance of the camera.
Those who have tested the iPhone 6 will assure you that the screen provides an excellent quality of the picture and outstanding visual experience for users. With this flagship you receive brilliant color accuracy and impressive contrast ratio. The display is viewable in strong sunlight thanks to the 558 nits brightness and the fact that it is not reflective. The screen of iPhone 6 is protected with oleophobic coating and shatter proof glass.
Apple iPhone 6 runs on iOS 8 out-of-the-box. This is the new upgrade of the platform packed with some nice new features and tons of improvements. To name a mere few of the goodies in iOS 8 are the improved Siri virtual assistant of the platform, the Apple Pay feature for mobile payments via NFC connectivity, the interactive notifications, the including of widgets in notifications, the health app and etc.
One of the simple and convenient features in iOS 8 is the provided to make working with one hand with the phone easier even by users with small hands. With tapping twice on the home button you will make the top side of the screen scroll down for an easy access.
Processor and Hardware
Apple iPhone 6 delivers an improved performance compared to its predecessor iPhone 5S. The phone works with a dual-core CPU 1.4GHz with Apple A8 chip and 1GB RAM. It is paired with PowerVR GPU with four cores. Even though the numbers of the processor are not much different than the hardware equipped in iPhone 5S, you will be surprised how better the iPhone 6 works. The benchmark tests reveal that it delivers up to 50% better performance on graphics compared to the last year’s flagship.
iPhone 6 is provided with M8 Sensor Co-processor that handles the compass, accelerometer, the gyroscope and the barometer which is a new sensor integrated in iPhone. Apple reveals that the M8 co-processor is energy efficient which is great for the battery life of the model.
The native storage in the handset can be 16 GB, 64GB or 128GB not expandable. As you can see Apple is not providing a 32GB version for its new flagship.
One of the extra features in the phone is the fingerprint sensor integrated in the home button named TouchID that we already know from iPhone 5S.
At first glance Apple iPhone 6 features the same iSight camera equipped in iPhone 5S with some improvements. It is a 8MP sensor with 1.5µm pixel size, 1/3-inch sensor size, dual-LED (dual tone) flash and the possibilities to record 1080p@60fps video. The new camera has Focus Pixels tech for faster focusing. It boasts the so called super Slo-mo mode and the Time Lapse feature.
The front facing camera is also similar to the snapper of iPhone 5S. It has 1.2MP, f/2.2 aperture and different modes for more fulfilling user experience.
iPhone 6 is armored with a non-removable battery with a capacity of 1810mAh. According to the official data for the model it can run for up to 14 hours in talk time before it needs recharging.
Apple iPhone 6 supports the connectivity features that we expect to see in a flagship, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, 4G LTE. The news from Apple is the addition of NFC connectivity that is purposed for Apple Pay only.
Apple iPhone 6 comes in three colors – silver, gold and space gray. It is released by the major carriers and retailers in the US and across the world.
